Warner Bros. has set an Oct. 5, 2018, release dates for Jason Momoa‘s standalone tentpole “Aquaman” in 3D and Imax.
James Wan is directing the superhero film with Peter Safran producing. Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, and Rob Cowan are executive producing. It’s the first title to land on that date.
Warner Bros. said last year that the character would be caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and the undersea Atlanteans, who are ready to lash out in revolt. Aquaman is based on the DC Comics character who’s king of Atlantis, born half-human as Arthur Curry and half-Atlantean. He was first introduced in the early 1940s.
Momoa made his debut as Aquaman in March in a cameo in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and will reprise that role in “Justice League.”
Amber Heard will also star in “Justice League” as Mera, the love interest of Aquaman, and is expected to return for “Aquaman.” “Justice League” is set to bow on Nov. 17, 2017, with Snyder directing from a script by Chris Terrio.
“Aquaman” is set to begin shooting in Australia next year. It’s part of a sprawling slate of movies in the DC universe through 2020, following “Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” this year. “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League” will open next year.

The studio originally announced those films in 2014, along with “Aquaman” and “The Flash,” starring Ezra Miller, for 2018; “Shazam” for 2019; “Cyborg,” starring Ray Fisher for 2020; and “Green Lantern” for 2020.
Studio chief Kevin Tsujihara announced last April at CinemaCon that Ben Affleck would star in and direct a standalone “Batman” movie, which also has not been dated yet.
